Introduction To Crisis Intervention for Health Care Workers
Today health care workers are seeing increases in mental illness, drug seeking behavior, substance abuse and aggressive patients. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Many times in dealing with these patients you also deal with the patient’s friends, family or significant others that may also be impaired, mentally ill or escalating the patients behavior.
To better prepare today’s health care workers for a more violent work environment and how to appropriately handle violent patients, Introduction To Crisis Intervention will look at:
- Verbal intervention principles
- Assessing your environment
- Looking for important behavioral warning signs
- Defensive posture/stance
- Personal space
- General personal protection basics and restraint
- Team response
- Incident debriefing.
This course is designed to better prepare today’s health care worker for dealing with violent patients and visitors encountered in EMS, hospitals, and other clinical settings.
